Terry Starnes
In 1985 when Terry Starnes was almost forced to stand behind a microphone and announce his first rodeo, he had no idea where he was headed. That rodeo was in the small Central Texas town of Mullin. Starnes was there with a friend that was entered in the bareback riding and a few minutes before the rodeo was to start, he informed Terry that the announcer hadn’t shown up and that he had volunteered him for the job.
Having been a competitor in High School and amateur rodeos Starnes had the background and the knowledge of the sport, but he certainly lacked the desire. “They had everything that a guy needed to get started in the announcing business.” he mused. “I did that rodeo with a 50 watt amplifier, 2 old horn speakers, a microphone as old as me, a battery operated cassette player and 2 cassette tapes; one was a National Anthem and the other was a Merl Haggard tape” When the rodeo was over the stock contractor found Terry and asked how much he owed him. “I hadn’t thought about that part so I told him just to pay me what it was worth to him.” He paid Terry $50.00 that night and as they say “the rest is history.”
Terry has now become one of the most sought-after rodeo announcers and broadcasters in the country. In 2011 he was behind the microphone at more than 40 events that took him from Maine to Arizona and Michigan to South Texas. He and his wife Shelley, who is an accomplished sound technician, have logged hundreds of thousands of miles and know their way around just about every major airport in the country.
Some of the accomplishments for the 59 year old Glen Rose, Texas native include 2 time announcer at the W.N.F.R. Bucking Horse and Bull Sale in Las Vegas Nevada (’99-’00); livestock announcer for the Southwestern Exposition and Livestock Show in Fort Worth, Texas (‘96-‘11); 2 time announcer for the Women’s National Finals Rodeo,(’01-’02), ‘07 CPRA Finals Announcer; arena announcer for the Ty Murray Celebrity Bullriding Challenge for CMT in July 2007 and in ‘08 was the arena announcer for one segment of the NBC reality series “America’s Toughest Jobs”; NBBA Finals (’11); UBBI Finals (’11).
